Nicotine can be absorbed into breast milk and even into the mucus inside a woman’s cervix.

Some individuals convince themselves that since they have already smoked for so many years, there is no reason for them to quit smoking now. The truth of the matter is that no matter how old they are or how long they have smoked for, quitting can and will help them live longer and regain some of their health. Individuals who have quit smoking by the age of 50 have cut their risk of dying in the next 15 years in half.

Why do People Become Addicted to Smoking?

Just like any other drug, nicotine produces pleasant feelings that make smokers want to smoke more. It is also a depressant, which affects the flow of information between nerve cells. As a person’s nervous system adjusts to nicotine, smokers gradually increase the number of cigarettes they smoke; this increases the amount of nicotine flowing through the individual’s blood.
