In today's declining economy, eating out is becoming more of a rarity. Even those who don't cook as a a rule are learning the basics.

Good nutrition is an essential factor in promoting wellness and good health. With the loss of jobs and health insurance, many struggle to maintain their health.

Affordable meals that are tasty, easy to make and nutritious can present a dilemma for even the best cooks. Reaching for a cookbook instead of the phone for take out is becoming more common in households around the world.

Another Bestseller in the Making?

Phyllis Pellman Good has authored a number of cookbooks in the Fix-It and Enjoy-It series including three national bestsellers. Her latest book, Fix-It and Enjoy-It Healthy Cookbook should be destined to hit the bestseller list as well.

One of the handiest hints Good offers to those who’d like to cook more at home, is to take the cookbook and sit quietly for awhile and make a list of menus for the week. Then use the recipes to formulate a grocery list.

Over 400 Recipes With Nutrition Information

This book offers over 400 easy to prepare stove-top and oven recipes. Most of the recipes are submitted by others. However, Good teamed up with nutrition experts from the Mayo Clinic to provide per serving nutritional information including calorie counts, carbs, fats, cholesterol and sodium levels.

The Food Pyramid

Using the Mayo Clinic’s Healthy Weight Pyramid, each recipe also contains information about how the recipe matches up with the daily serving goals of this pyramid for fats, protein/dairy, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables. There is a great explanation of how the pyramid works and how daily serving recommendations translate to calorie levels.

The clinic’s pyramid also contains a small section at the top to allow for up to 75 calories from sweets per day, but the chart next to each recipe doesn’t include sweets. There are recipes in the book for desserts. However, alternative choices such as fresh fruit are encouraged to satisfy sweet cravings.

Making Healthy Foods Appealing

Throughout the book, Good offers helpful cooking technique hints, how to make healthy foods appealing to the taste buds for even the most stubborn, tips to help children eat healthy, and how to slowly change to a healthier diet.

She also provides valuable information about how to substitute fresh ingredients for canned or frozen foods; and provides an extensive list of equivalent measurements. She suggests nine basic tools each cook should have to make cooking easier.

The 400 plus recipes are categorized into Main Dishes (by specific category such as salads, seafood, beef, poultry and pork, etc.), Salads, Vegetables, Whole Grains and Pastas, Soups, Breakfasts and Brunches, Breads, Desserts, Beverages, Appetizers and Snacks, and Sauces, Seasonings and Dressings.

Fix-It and Enjoy-It Healthy Cookbook would be a great addition to any cook’s library, but it will be especially helpful to those just learning to make (healthy) meals at home.
