Job opportunities will be abundant for students studying to become a radiologist technician. The Bureau of labor Statistics predicts an above average job growth in this field as diagnostic imaging centers and physicians' offices will increasingly need qualified radiologist technicians. The vast majority of these health care professionals work in hospitals.
Radiologist technicians, also known as radiographers, take x-rays to help with patient diagnosis. They are responsible for obtaining images of various regions of the human body to detect abnormalities. They also help prepare the patient for the x-ray by describing what to expect and by putting the patient in the proper position for the procedure.
Other job duties include making sure proper procedures are followed by taking the necessary steps to protect patients and staff from excess exposure to radiation. A radiologist technician is also responsible for maintaining the x-ray machines, managing patient record files, and making sure the radiology department is running efficiently. Organizing work schedules is also part of the job.
Radiology Technician Training
Students can find radiology technician training programs at universities, colleges, hospitals, and vocational schools. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most of these programs last from 1 to 4 years. Graduates can enter this profession with either an associate or bachelor's degree. Most students choose to get training from a two year program.
Health care professionals who work in related professions such as medical technology, can change professions and work as a radiologist technician, after earning a certificate from a one year program. Students who are interested in management, administrative or teaching positions must earn a bachelor's or master's degree from a radiologic technology program.
Radiology Technician Schools
Students can ensure that they are getting a quality education by attending radiology technician schools that are accredited. Accreditation is handled by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). This will give students the assurance that their curriculum is up to industry standards. Students can find out which schools are accredited by contacting JRCT.
Students will receive classroom instruction as well as clinical lessons in physiology, radiation physics, medical terminology, and patient care procedures. They will also study principles of imaging, anatomy, and medical ethics. According to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, there are more than 1,000 accredited radiology technician schools in the United States.
Graduates can increase their chances of getting hired as a radiologist technician by becoming certified. In order to do they must pass an exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians. Only students who graduate from certified radiology technician training programs are eligible to try for certification. Certification must be renewed every two years.
