OTC meds are over-the-counter medications.

OTC medications are medications that can be purchased over the counter from retailers such as drug stores, pharmacies, grocery stores and convenience stores. A prescription is not needed for these medications.

Typical OTC medications include Tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen, cough and cold formulas, and medications for allergies, constipation, diarhhea and nausea. Although these medications don't require a prescription, they may cntain ingredients that can interfere with prescription medications. They can cause or escalate symptoms such as high blood pressure, rapid pulse rates or elevated blood glucose levels.

All OTC medications should be discussed with your health care practitioner before taking. Your health care practitioner should be aware of any OTC meds you take frequently.

Always read the labels carefully for ingredients, warnings, and expected actions or reactions. Many OTC formulas can contain similar ingredients and you should not take them simultaneously. Examples include cold, cough or flu formulas that contain ibuprofen, aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol). Don't take ibuprofen with a cold formula containing Advil. Advil is a brand name for ibuprofen. Consult your pharmacist for assistance.

Some OTC medications such as Sudafed can be puirchased without a prescription, but are kept behind the counter and must be dispensed by the pharmacy department. Limited amounts of the drug can be purchased at one time and in most cases, either a driver's license number or other identifying information is collected by those dispensing the drug. This is because ingredients in Sudafed are used to make illegal methamphetamines.
