A lack of energy can make even basic tasks difficult to face. However, there are a number of ways to boost energy levels naturally and add some zest to life

Lethargy can occur in people for a number of different reasons. Stress, depression or work pressures can all reduce energy levels, as can poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Often, the steps that people take to boost energy levels can actually make the situation worse. Caffeine and alcohol can create temporary boosts in energy, but ultimately may deplete levels even further, leaving the individual feeling worse off than he was before.

Take these simple steps to boost energy naturally, warding off lethargy and regaining a zest for life.

Eat to Beat Dips in Energy

Food is fuel. Consume rice and grains, complex carbohydrates and five portions of fruit and vegetables to gain the maximum energy from food. Opt for fruits such as kiwi, orange and strawberries which are high in vitamin C and may support the immune system. Eating unsaturated fats such as that found in avocado, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils will keep energy levels stable and help the body absorb essential vitamins. Eat regularly, and do not skip breakfast – ever!

Drinking for Health

Dehydration can be a huge contributing factor towards tiredness and sluggishness. The body is made up of 70% water, and reductions in fluid levels can cause lethargy, confusion and irritability as well as headaches. Aim to drink six to eight glasses a day to keep energy levels up and stay well hydrated.

Rest Well, Play Better

A full night of sleep supports the body in warding off infection and leaves people refreshed and revitalised. Lack of sleep causes slowness in brain function and reduces energy significantly. Stick to seven or eight hours of sleep whenever possible.

Get Enough Light

Having enough daylight is imperative for humans – we all thrive on sunlight and feel more sluggish in darker months. Get out as much as possible, and if daylight hours are short, invest in a daylight simulating lamp or light bulbs that will trick the body and mind into positivity, whatever the weather.

Love, Laugh, Live

Laughter stimulates feel-good chemicals and provides a superb all-round boost which can pep up energy levels and boost feelings of wellbeing. In times of stress, people often forget to laugh. Invest in some films or books that will prompt a fit of giggles, and take note of how mood changes and energy levels increase as a result.

Get Regular Exercise

It may seem like an anomaly to suggest that expending energy makes people feel more energetic, but this is a fact. Even half an hour of moderate exercise a day will increase circulation, boost serotonin levels and get the body revving up to banish sluggishness. Invest in exercise to beat lethargy and stick to a routine every day that enables exercise.

Speak to a GP

If all else fails, a good GP will listen and be able to provide help and support if energy levels are persistently low. It is important to rule out factors such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or other underlying causes for persistent lethargy.
