Medpie.com is a new website written by physicians for consumers. A primary purpose of this site is to provide information for consumers about health care in the news.

Dr. Robert Latkany, MD, is a board certified ophthalmologist and author of The Dry Eye Remedy, which was published in 2007. Dr. Latkany is also the founder and director of the Dry Eye Clinic at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary.

Over the past year, Dr. Latkany, along with several colleagues, has formed Medpie.com. Written by practicing physicians, the information contained at Medpie.com is geared towards the general public. The doctors comment on current health news stories and topics to provide accurate information for consumers.

According to Dr.Latkany, Medpie.com is not an encyclopedia site and it is also not intended to provide medical advice. It is however designed to help consumers understand health care issues and to make informed decisions about their own health care and status.

Accurate Information for Consumers

The physicians comment on health news topics and events to provide a basis of truthful, informative and useful information to consumers. There are five main categories consisting of Conversations (featuring interviews with experts), Top Health Stories, Politics, Nutrition, and People. Each category has five sub categories such as Featured Articles, In the News, Opinion, Featured Videos and an on the web section.

The Home page may seem a little awkward, but scroll down the page or click on any of the major categories surrounding the globe, and it will bring up well populated pages of information on a variety of topics. There is also a very helpful Search section.

Politics and Health Care

Some of the topics covered include politics which encompasses the health care reform underway in Washington D.C., and includes topics of health care concerns around the globe which are being controlled or influenced by the political arena.

Other topics serve to provide information on topics such as the hospital quality measures which have been in place for awhile now. What can consumers learn about the hospitals that serve their communities and how can they use this to make better decisions about where to seek health care?

An interview with Amy Knowles, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions, NYU College of Nursing, provides insight into the growing shortage of nurses and how this affects health care.

Celebrities and Health Care

The People section, among other things, provides information about celebrities making news with health care issues. For instance Lance Armstrong’s broken clavicle is discussed along with an X-ray depicting this type of injury, and a discussion about the possibility that Armstrong will be recovered in time for the next big race in just eleven weeks.

The need for wearing helmets is discussed in an article discussing the untimely death of actress Natasha Richardson from a head injury in a seemingly minor fall on the ski slopes.

The doctors at Medpie.com hope to bust the myths and provide accurate information to help consumers understand what they hear and read in the news.
