Lower the Chances For CancerTake Care of the Body to Ward Off CancerNov 13, 2008 Laura Block-Stewart
Cancer is a frightening word for many people. Here are some steps to help people make positive change in their lives to minimize the possibility of a cancer diagnosis.
Hearing that lab tests indicate there may be cancer in the body, is frightening. While more tests and biopsies are performed, patients are often left wondering what they did wrong and what steps they need to take to lead a healthier life. Whether results come back negative or positive, now is the right time to make positive life changes in order to either minimize the chances of cancer or stay healthy while treating cancer. Eat Healthy FoodsIt has been estimated that 20 to 30 percent of cancers result from people being overweight. Therefore it is important to eat a healthy diet, with small portions, that includes fruits, vegetables, and legumes. There are numerous recipes that help prevent cancer that are fresh, healthy and appetizing. Be sure to take a daily vitamin and be certain the vitamin includes both vitamin B and D. If one has already been diagnosed with cancer, talk with the doctor about a specific diet and vitamin supplement that is right for the diagnosis. Exercise MoreThere is a connection between higher levels of exercise and lower incidences of cancer. Therefore, it is crucial for all people, those who want to prevent cancer, those who have cancer, and those who want to reduce their risks for other diseases, to maintain an active lifestyle. After discussing an exercise routine with the doctor, get out there and at the least, walk every single day for 30 minutes. Don’t SmokeSmoking really doesn’t have any positive impact on the body. So why do it? Not only are smokers putting themselves at risk for lung, colon, stomach, cervical, pancreatic, and kidney cancer, but they are also subjecting others to carcinogens. Talk with the doctor about new and improved options to stop smoking as soon as possible. Stress Less, Laugh More, and Stay PositivePsychological stress affects the body in a number of ways and chronic and high levels of stress are extremely harmful to the body. Stress can lead to weight gain, depression, heart disease and lots of unhealthy behaviors such as drinking too much or overeating. Try to eliminate stress as much as possible. Find opportunities to have fun and to participate in stimulating activities where there are many opportunities to laugh. Stop certain behaviors like thinking negatively and try to stay positive for better health. Limit Alcohol ConsumptionThere has been a lot of information in the news declaring that red wine may have beneficial components; however, this does not mean that people should consume too much. Women should limit themselves to one 4 oz glass per day and men should only have a maximum of two 4oz glasses per day. See Your Doctor and Get Regular ScreeningsDiagnosing cancer early on improves the prognosis for treatment. So, talk with family members about any history of cancer in the family. Do some research online, talk with the doctor and be aware of any symptoms in order to detect the illness right away. See the doctor often, get regular checkups and screenings, and don’t put off seeing the doctor if something is “not right”. If You Have Already Been DiagnosedIf you have already been diagnosed, follow the suggestions above, but work in close contact with your doctor, get second and third opinions from highly regarded doctors in your state and be aware of the most up to date treatments. Keep doing research about the condition, take each day as it comes, and stay positive!
