Microwave Dangers

This Common Appliance May Be Anything but Harmless

Microwave ovens may not be the salvation of the modern woman always pressed for time. Despite their widespread prevalence and use, microwaves may present health hazards.

There are few kitchens in America that do not have a microwave oven, even though there is a wealth of information regarding the detrimental health effects that can result from using these modern, time-saving contraptions.

Microwave Ovens Destroy Nutrients

Perhaps the least of the problems with microwaves is their destruction of essential nutrients in so-called “nuked” food. Nutritionally and chemically, food is so radically altered when it is microwaved, that the body often does not recognize what the substance is and, as a result, gets little or no benefit from the food. Vitamins and minerals are reduced, destroyed or changed into cancer-causing free radicals.

Microwave Ovens adversely Affect Health

According to Sheryl Walters, microwaved foods cause a plethora of dangerous physical reactions. Walters states that eating microwaved foods causes:

  • Stomach and intestinal tumors
  • A lowering of the immune system
  • Loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability and a decrease in intelligence
  • Cancerous cells to increase in blood
  • Lowered hormone production both sexes
  • Digestive disorders

Larry Cook of the Idaho Observer and Donna Gates (BodyEcology.com) both maintain that microwaved food has deleterious effects on one’s health. They say that microwaved foods…

  • Reduce levels of vitamin B 12
  • Decrease anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer properties
  • Diminish bacteria-digesting enzymes in breast milk (don’t warm the baby’s bottle in the microwave)
  • Lower the body’s ability to scavenge for ad neutralize free radicals

Adverse Reactions to Microwaves

Numerous studies show that microwaved foods negatively impact one’s cholesterol level and lower one’s hemoglobin. There are even those who argue that America’s obesity epidemic was launched with the introduction of microwave ovens.

According to Larry Cook, Stephanie Relfe, a Kinesiologist, “…found that all of her patients gave body signals of having allergic reactions to microwaved food.” In fact, Cook quotes David Bridgeman, also a kinesiologist as saying, "Of all the people I test for allergies, 99.9% so far show severe sensitivity to any microwaved food."

Because of adverse results from studies conducted in the Soviet Union and elsewhere, microwaves were banned in Russia in 1976.

Some Believe Microwaves Are Safe

There is still a host of people who expound that the use of microwave ovens is entirely safe providing one does not cook all of one’s meals in the microwave. Additionally, it is also vital that one not use plastic of any kind in the microwave, and not stand in front of the door. Microwaves produce non-ionizing radiation, which is the type of radiation that does not alter your DNA. The most dangerous aspect of microwave use, advocates contend, is the superheating of liquids which can cause serious, painful burns.

Even many restaurants use microwaves for heating pre-prepared meals. Whether you want microwaved food or not, it may be served more often than you realize.

Microwaves are ubiquitous in this country. Despite studies showing adverse health effects, their use has not diminished. Proponents argue that these are safe, efficient devices. Others feel they present an imminent threat to one’s health.

Maija Haavisto :
Most of the "information" in this article is dangerous misinformation. People who don't really know medicine (well enough to understand that random kooks aren't credible sources) shouldn't be writing medical articles.

I think the points in this article are well taken. There was a time when "science" said smoking wasn't harmful, either. And it would appear that both the appliance manufacturing and restaurant industries have a stake in producing material that says microwaving is not harmful. I would rather err on the safe side, and avoid microwaving whenever possible. As long as fifteen years ago, I banished microwaving from my cooking repertoire because of early reports indicating some problems with its use in human nutrition. I eventually allowed a microwave back into my house, but I use is very rarely, only to heat water for instant chicken stock for recipes, hoping that in tiny amounts, the altered food ingredients will not be harmful.

Yes but there is science behind not smoking. I haven't seen any good science behind the idea that microwave ovens are dangerous.
The idea that microwave radiation from cell phones & cell towers is dangerous has a lot more science behind it.

To the guest comment about no good science behind the idea microwave ovens are dangerous: Try googling "Hans Hertel microwave" and you will see some good science about the subject. As far as Maija is concerned: I think you may be the only "kook" if you honestly believe that the manufacture-industrial complex has our health and best interests at the top of their priorities. They would cover up anything no matter how dangerous it was to humans if it meant making millions of dollars which it does.
