Celebrate health care workers in an effort to encourage more people to seek careers in the field and reduce staffing shortages.

April 7, 2006 is World Health Day. The theme is Working Together for Health. This year the focus is on honoring health care workers, and working to resolve the shortages in the health care workforce throughout the world.

No country is immune to this growing crisis. Many of these shortages are the result of years of ignoring issues such as salary, working conditions, management issues, and education/training for health care workers in all categories and levels.

Events will be held worldwide on this day to celebrate the efforts of health care workers and draw attention to the this crisis. It's time to honor those who provide the backbone to the health care industry and provide the care needed to the patients of the world.

Showing the world that health care workers are the most vital element of the health care system and that they should be celebrated is just one of the first steps necessary to encourage young people to explore and choose careers in health care.

As the population ages and grows over the next decade, the need for health care will increase dramatically as well. There are critical shortages of nurses and doctors throughout the world now. We all have a vested interest in supporting efforts to solve this crisis.
